Die Provinz liegt im Übergangsbereich vom Saharaatlas zur Wüste Sahara und umfasst eine Fläche von ca. 27.000 km². Mit 185.347 Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2008)<ref name="RGPH 2008" /> ist sie dünn besiedelt, die Bevölkerungsdichte beträgt rund 7 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer.
Die Provinz El Bayadh ging 1984 aus der Provinz Saïda hervor. 2026 wurde ihr Südwesten als Provinz El Abiodh Sidi Cheikh selbständig.<ref name="Loi.26-06">Loi n° 26-06 du 16 Chaoual 1447 correspondant au 4 avril 2026 modifiant et complétant la loi n° 84-09 du 4 février 1984 relative à l'organisation territoriale du pays, Art. 36, 52 bis 20 (franz./arab.)</ref>
